Flick Makes Decisive Midfield Call as Star Player Loses Starting Spot After Bilbao Display

Barcelona’s recent match against Athletic Bilbao has prompted a significant internal review from Hansi Flick, with the manager reportedly reassessing individual performances across his midfield. The display at San Mamés appears to have solidified his stance on one particular player.
Fermín López, who has shown flashes of promise throughout the season, delivered an inconsistent performance that highlighted concerns Flick has been monitoring for several weeks. While the young midfielder is admired for his energy and attacking instinct, his decision-making and positional discipline have remained areas in need of improvement.
Flick, who prioritises balance and tactical structure in midfield, is believed to have been particularly frustrated by the lack of control displayed during the Bilbao match. The performance exposed recurring issues in transitions and defensive support, prompting the coach to take a more decisive approach.
As a result, Fermín has reportedly been left out of the starting lineup for Barcelona’s upcoming Champions League fixture against Chelsea. The decision emphasises Flick’s commitment to fielding a more stable and experienced midfield unit for high-pressure European matches.
This adjustment also opens the door for players such as Pedri, Gavi, or even İlkay Gündoğan to assume greater responsibility in maintaining control and rhythm in midfield. Their tactical maturity and consistency offer the reliability Flick is seeking in knockout-level competitions.
Although Fermín has not been fully excluded from the squad, the move is widely viewed as a clear message that development must be accompanied by dependable performance levels. Flick’s choice reflects the competitive standards expected within a team aiming to re-establish itself among Europe’s elite.
The coming weeks will be important for Fermín as he works to regain the coach’s trust and secure his place in the rotation. His potential remains unquestioned, but earning a consistent starting role will require greater stability and tactical awareness in the decisive phase of
the season.
