Where Newcastle United stand on a deal for Giorgio Scalvini after ‘no bid has been launched’

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini this summer, with Eddie Howe keen on signing a young centre-back to replace Fabian Schar long-term.

With a move for Anthony Elanga all but announced, the Magpies are moving on to their other targets ahead of a busy 2025/26 season.

Eddie Howe prioritised a right-winger, and has finally got the player he has been so eager to sign in Elanga at Newcastle United. It has been stated that after Callum Wilson’s departure, the focus of the recruitment team is to sign a new striker for Newcastle to give Alexander Isak more competition and Howe more strength in depth.

As well as a striker, Newcastle are looking to sign a young centre-back ahead of next season, one who has the potential to replace Fabian Schar long-term. The Switzerland international is 34 this year and is now in the final year of his contract, so a new signing in the position is crucial.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle are interested in signing Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta. The defender caught Howe’s eye despite missing the majority of the 2024/25 campaign due to injury. It was revealed that Scalvini will cost £52m this summer, and a new transfer report has stated what the Magpies are now thinking after the news.

While reports elsewhere stated that Newcastle had held talks with Atalanta for Scalvini, it is believed that the Magpies still just hold an admiration for the 21-year-old who made his debut in Serie A at the age of 17.

Fabrizio Romano said Newcastle have to battle several clubs for Scalvini, with the defender highly regarded elsewhere. £52m would make Scalvini one of the most expensive Newcastle players ever, with the fee falling just short of what the Magpies paid for Sandro Tonali in 2023. It is understandably a huge fee for a player who played just eight games last season.

Howe and his recruitment team appear to be aware of his worries. According to The Athletic, Newcastle still hold an interest in Scalvini, with the club likely aware of his price tag. While no bid or formal talks have taken place, he is still being ‘closely tracked’ by recruiters.

The report also reads that Newcastle remain interested in Marc Guehi this summer. The defender has a year left on his current deal and has already made it clear to Crystal Palace that he will not be extending his contract.
