Kobbie Mainoo’s recent absence from the starting lineup is less about his ability and more about the specific demands of Ruben Amorim’s system. While Mainoo is exceptionally composed and technically gifted, Amorim currently prioritizes a midfielder capable of operating in “beast mode” out of possession—someone who can dominate duels, shut down transitions, and anticipate danger before it develops.

Mainoo is still refining that defensive intensity, and the coaching staff has been working closely with him to build that side of his game. Amorim’s preference in that role leans toward a more physical midfield profile—players with Anderson-like aggression, quick reactions in defensive situations, and the strength to act as a protective shield when the team’s structure is tested. This does not diminish Mainoo’s quality, but it explains the tactical choice.

On the ball, Mainoo remains one of the most gifted young midfielders at the club. His vision, ball-carrying, and ability to progress play set him apart from others in his age group. However, the team’s current defensive approach requires additional physicality and intensity in transition, which is why Amorim has opted for alternatives in certain matches.

Importantly, this is not an argument against Mainoo’s inclusion. He is more than capable of starting and offers a balance the midfield often lacks. While he will not displace Bruno Fernandes, Mainoo has a strong case to start ahead of Ugarte when considering overall impact, fluidity in possession, and the attacking rhythm he introduces when given consistent minutes.

Mainoo’s pathway back into the starting XI is straightforward: develop the out-of-possession aggression Amorim demands. Once he masters that aspect, his technical brilliance will make him an automatic starter. His time is coming—there is little doubt about that.
