Real Madrid Rule Out Summer Return for Nico Paz

Real Madrid have decided against bringing back former academy midfielder Nico Paz this summer, according to reports from *OK Diario*. The 20-year-old Argentine, currently playing for Como in Serie A, had been considered as a potential reinforcement for Madrid’s midfield.

Paz’s strong 2024/25 campaign, where he registered five goals and four assists, initially made him an attractive option. His €8 million buyback clause also presented a cost-effective opportunity for Los Blancos to strengthen their squad depth under new manager Xabi Alonso. However, the club’s transfer strategy has since shifted. Real Madrid are now prioritizing the signing of River Plate’s 17-year-old attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono in a deal worth €45 million,

effectively ending their pursuit of Paz. Another key factor in the decision was Paz’s own reservations about his role at the Santiago Bernabéu. With fierce competition in midfield, including Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Dani Ceballos, and Arda Güler, regular minutes would have been difficult to secure.

As a result, Paz will remain with Como for at least another season. Real Madrid, however, retain a 50% sell-on clause and the option to activate his buyback clause in either 2026 or 2027, keeping the door open for a future return. The decision highlights Madrid’s preference for long-term planning,

as Mastantuono is viewed as a higher-potential prospect. The Argentine teenager is expected to join the club’s Castilla squad initially, with a pathway to the first team in the coming years. Paz, meanwhile, will continue his development in Italy, where he has become an important player for Como. His performances have drawn interest from other clubs,

but Real Madrid’s sell-on clause ensures they could still benefit from his future success. The move also reflects the club’s confidence in their current midfield options. With young stars like Bellingham, Camavinga, and Valverde already established, adding another midfielder was not seen as an urgent need.

For Paz, staying at Como offers the chance to play consistently and further prove his worth. A strong season could reignite Madrid’s interest or attract other top European clubs willing to meet his valuation.
