Real Madrid: Ferland Mendy’s Starting Role Under Threat Amid Alphonso Davies Rumors
Real Madrid’s pursuit of Alphonso Davies has sparked significant speculation about the future of French left-back Ferland Mendy. Reports suggest that the Spanish giants are close to reaching an agreement to bring the Canadian international to the Santiago Bernabéu next season, a move that could jeopardize Mendy’s place in the starting XI.
According to Marca, Real Madrid has been eyeing Davies, Bayern Munich’s dynamic fullback, for years. While the report claims an agreement is already in place, Davies’ agent, Nedal Huoseh, has denied these rumors. Speaking to Fabrizio Romano, Huoseh stated, “An agreement with Real Madrid? That’s not true. While Alphonso has many options, we haven’t finalized any deal with any club. A renewal with Bayern remains a possibility. Any reports suggesting otherwise are incorrect.”
Davies’ current contract with Bayern expires in the summer of 2025, allowing him to negotiate with other clubs starting January 1. This timeline makes his agent’s swift rebuttal understandable, but Real Madrid’s interest in the player is undeniable.
The Spanish club has a history of targeting players nearing the end of their contracts to secure valuable signings at reduced costs. This strategy has been notably effective, as seen with players like David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger. Alongside Davies, Real Madrid is reportedly also monitoring Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Should Davies join Real Madrid, Ferland Mendy’s future becomes uncertain. Signed from Lyon in 2019, Mendy has been a reliable presence for Los Blancos, but his own contract runs out in 2025. With Davies’ arrival potentially signaling a shift in priorities, Mendy may find himself relegated to a secondary role or even on the transfer list.
For now, Real Madrid fans will wait to see if this high-profile move materializes, but one thing is clear: the competition for the left-back position is set to intensify.
