Rangers get ‘mercurial talent’ as Djeidi Gassama transfer sealed

Rangers could potentially sign a brilliant prospect in Sheffield Wednesday forward Djeidi Gassama this transfer window.

The 21-year-old joined the Owls from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 and has since become a fan favourite at Hillsborough.

Gassama is attracting interest from Ibrox, with the EFL Championship outfit possibly considering offers for the left-winger this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is trying to raise funds, with the Glaswegian outfit already agreeing a long-term deal with the French youngster.

Gassama will bring something to the Gers that they need in attack, according to Jonny McFarlane.

The Scottish journalist has had a look at the 21-year-old and believes the Light Blues could be getting a real talent on their hands at Ibrox.

McFarlane feels the Frenchman is mercurial and his ability to go past players may prove fruitful for the Glaswegian outfit next season.

Speaking on The Rangers Review (10 July), the journalist said: “I had a look at Gassama, and I think that boy is a real talent. If we’re talking about the challenges that Rangers face in terms of breaking down teams that are packed behind the ball, I’ve seen some of the clips. He’s got really quick feet, and he can go past a man.

“That’s something that’s kind of needed; that’s an important aspect of a successful Rangers team. I think he’s mercurial, he’s up and down, there’s no doubt he’s a winger in that regard.”

Gassama may not be the only addition to the Gers’ attack this summer, with Hull City forward Abu Kamara also being eyed.

The Light Blues submitted an offer for Southampton winger Samuel Edozie recently, but the Saints rejected the bid.

Russell Martin will undoubtedly be hoping for multiple additions to his front line in the coming weeks, if Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers leave.

Rangers are considering Josh Windass’ return to Ibrox, and the 31-year-old could be a suitable replacement for the Nigerian striker, who AEK Athens want.

The Gers have built a solid foundation after bolstering their backline with Emmanuel Fernandez and Nasser Djiga, with a deal for Leicester City’s Conor Coady also being worked on.

Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard will definitely contribute in the midfield, but fans in G51 will arguably be most pleased with someone like Gassama.
