Nico Williams Wants Barcelona Move – Key Details Revealed

Nico Williams has informed Athletic Club of his desire to leave this summer and join Barcelona, according to breaking reports. The 21-year-old winger is keen on a move to Camp Nou, but several hurdles remain before the deal can be finalized. Williams currently has a contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2027, featuring a €58 million release clause.
Barcelona sees this as their pathway to signing him, though the Basque club is reportedly pushing to increase the clause to deter suitors. Barcelona’s technical director, Deco, has already held talks with Williams’ agent, following the player’s own request. Manager Hansi Flick has also personally contacted the winger to outline his vision, further strengthening Barça’s appeal.
However, competition is fierce. Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea have all expressed interest, with Bayern reportedly offering €60-65 million and a lucrative salary package. Despite this, Williams is said to favor a move to Barcelona. A major factor in his decision is his strong relationship with Barcelona’s young star Lamine Yamal.
The two have developed a close bond while playing together for Spain, adding to Barça’s pull. Yet, Athletic Bilbao is not giving up easily. The club is urging Williams to stay, highlighting his deep connection to the team, where he plays alongside his brother Iñaki. They also hope Champions League football next season could convince him to remain.
Financially, Barcelona faces significant obstacles. The club is currently over La Liga’s salary cap and must offload players or secure new revenue streams before registering new signings. To navigate this, Barça is considering creative financial structures, such as backloaded contracts similar to the one used for Robert Lewandowski.
This would allow them to manage immediate financial constraints while securing Williams’ signature. Time is of the essence. Reports suggest Barcelona will only wait until this summer to complete the deal before moving on to other targets. Athletic, meanwhile, is preparing for the possibility of his departure but remains hopeful he could stay for another season.
If Barcelona can meet the €58 million clause and resolve their financial issues, Williams could soon be lining up alongside Yamal at Camp Nou. If not, other European giants are ready to swoop in.
The coming weeks will be decisive in determining whether Nico Williams’ dream move to Barcelona becomes a reality or if he remains at Athletic Bilbao for at least another season.
