Nico Williams Bids Farewell to Athletic Bilbao, Set to Join a New Team
Nico Williams is making headlines again over his next career move. After choosing to stay at Athletic Bilbao last summer, despite several strong offers—most notably from Barcelona—he has reportedly had a change of heart. According to El Nacional, Williams now feels that his decision to stay was a mistake, influenced by Athletic’s mixed results and the impressive opportunities he sees elsewhere, especially under Hansi Flick’s management.
Although Barcelona was once eager to sign him, the club has since shifted focus. With Rafinha excelling in his role, Barcelona has cooled on Williams, who might have missed his chance to don their colors. The club warned him that such opportunities are rare, and it seems he now regrets not taking the offer when he had it.
Despite his favorable €58 million price tag, Barcelona has stepped back from pursuing him. However, other top clubs remain keen on signing him. Williams is ready to leave Bilbao in 2025 to join a more ambitious team, one competing for titles and Champions League glory while offering him a better salary.
Liverpool, led by Arne Slot, is reportedly among the interested parties. With Mohamed Salah’s future uncertain, Williams could be a potential replacement. Though his dream remains to play for Barcelona, Williams has come to terms with the reality that the Catalan club may no longer be in the race for his signature.
