Mikey Johnston to Flamengo transfer takes a new twist as West Brom star’s future becomes clear

Mikey Johnston became involved in one of the strangest episodes of the summer transfer window so far as he aims to impress ahead of World Cup qualifying.
The Republic of Ireland international will be aiming to impress their manager this season no matter where he plays his football, aiming to achieve the dream of appearing at a World Cup.
Johnston was soon rumoured to be of interest to Brazilian side Flamengo, with a number of strange incidents playing out following the news breaking.
Ireland legend Robbie Keane was asked by Brazilian TV about the quality of Johnston, and it seemed he would be heading to the South American nation.
However, the move broke down, with a number of reasons being spread as to why, but these have now been cleared up.

A number of reasons for the move breaking down began to surface, with it being reported that due to fan criticism, the deal was cancelled.
While it was also mentioned that his injury record was a factor, Ben Jacobs has cleared the rumours up by posting to X.
He said: “Suggestions Mikey Johnston’s proposed move to Flamengo fell apart due to his injury record are wide of the mark.
“Flamengo never agreed on a fee with West Brom, and no medical took place.
“Johnston happy to stay at The Hawthorns.”
The impact Mikey Johnston could have this season for West Brom
Ryan Mason was appointed the new manager of West Brom ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.
Mikey Johnston has flourished since moving south of the border in his move away from Celtic.
It was hoped he would find form to return to the Scottish champions, but West Brom opted to sign him, and he has become a dynamic player for the club.

West Brom will be hopeful he can continue to demonstrate the form he has to this point in his career at the Hawthorns.
The Baggies are looking to return to the Premier League, and Johnston would be key to achieving this, as he is such a creative force in the Championship.
