Manchester United Set for Player Clear-Out in January Transfer Window

Ruben Amorim, six games into his managerial reign at Manchester United, is already looking to reshape his squad.

However, Manchester United’s financial situation and strict Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) make selling players a priority before any new signings can be made.

Lindelof and Eriksen on the Chopping Block

Two players seemingly on their way out are Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen. Both players’ contracts expire next summer, and the club has shown no interest in extensions. Amorim reportedly doesn’t see them as part of his long-term plans.

Eriksen’s Diminished Role

Eriksen, who enjoyed a resurgence under previous manager Erik ten Hag with regular starts, has seen his playing time drastically reduced under Amorim.

The new manager’s high-pressing tactics expose Eriksen’s lack of physicality, and the return of Kobbie Mainoo from injury has further relegated him to the bench.

A potential move to MLS could be on the cards for the Danish midfielder.

Lindelof’s Injury Woes and Lack of Favor

Lindelof hasn’t featured under Amorim at all. Persistent injuries and his low position on the defensive pecking order make his departure almost inevitable. Despite their shared past at Benfica, Amorim doesn’t see the Swedish defender fitting into his plans, especially with Leny Yoro regaining fitness. United hopes to recoup a transfer fee for Lindelof in January.

Potential Destinations and Loan Options

Lindelof has reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Italy, Germany, Spain, the Saudi Pro League, and even his former team Benfica. Closer to home, Leicester City, now managed by former United caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, has expressed interest in a potential loan deal.

A loan move to Leicester could be a temporary solution for Lindelof, reducing his hefty £120,000-a-week wage burden for United.

Depending on Leicester’s performance in the relegation battle, the loan could include an option or obligation to buy.

Similar to Lindelof, Eriksen has attracted interest from European and MLS clubs.

Considering his reduced role at United, the January transfer window could see him leave for a fee that benefits the club financially.

Reinforcements Hinged on Departures

Amorim is eager to strengthen his squad, particularly with a left-sided wingback to fit his tactical system.

However, United’s financial constraints mean any incoming transfers depend on outgoing players generating funds.

Success in offloading Lindelof and Eriksen could unlock the financial backing of new majority shareholders INEOS, allowing Amorim to pursue reinforcements in January. For now, the focus is on player departures to pave the way for potential squad improvements in the second half of the season.
