Atletico Madrid’s Pursuit of Julian Alvarez: Financial Hurdles and Potential Alternatives
Atletico Madrid have recently engaged in discussions with Julian Alvarez’s representatives, signaling a serious interest in acquiring the Manchester City forward. Reports suggest that Alvarez, who has been dubbed by some outlets as Atletico’s “dream signing,” is open to the idea of a move to the Spanish capital. However, the financial terms required to secure his transfer could present a significant challenge for the Madrid-based club.
Manchester City has set a steep asking price for Alvarez, reportedly demanding €70 million upfront with an additional €20 million in performance-related bonuses. This valuation poses a considerable obstacle for Atletico Madrid, who have been actively exploring other options due to their budget constraints.
The financial strain is evident as Atletico Madrid have been negotiating over the €40 million release clause for Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk. Although discussions with Girona are reportedly progressing positively, it remains uncertain whether Atletico will be able to allocate the necessary funds to meet City’s demands for Alvarez.
Given the current financial climate and Atletico’s cautious spending approach, it seems unlikely that they would commit over €100 million to strengthen their attacking options in one transfer window. Therefore, unless Manchester City is willing to lower their asking price or entertain a loan arrangement, a deal for Alvarez may remain out of reach for Atletico.
As the transfer window progresses, Atletico Madrid may need to reassess their strategy and consider alternative targets if they are to bolster their squad effectively without exceeding their financial limits.
