Rising Star Yan Couto: From Premier League Forgotten Talent to Hot Transfer Property

Yan Couto, a promising young defender who joined Manchester City from Brazilian side Coritiba in 2020, has yet to make his debut for the Premier League champions. Despite his potential, Couto has spent the past four years away from the Etihad, undergoing loan spells at Girona and Portuguese club Braga.

City secured Couto’s services following his impressive performance in the 2019 Under-17 World Cup with Brazil. However, his journey at City has not unfolded as anticipated, with the defender struggling to break into the first team and becoming somewhat of a forgotten figure at the club.

Couto’s fortunes have, however, seen a significant upturn over the past year. His standout performances during his second loan stint at Girona have substantially increased his market value. The young Brazilian made a notable impact in La Liga, featuring 34 times for Girona in the last season. His contribution was pivotal as Girona finished third in La Liga, securing a spot in the Champions League. Couto was instrumental in this success, amassing 10 assists and establishing himself as one of the key players in the squad.

This resurgence has attracted the attention of several top clubs. Borussia Dortmund, fresh off their Champions League final appearance, are now in prime position to secure Couto’s signature. Their interest marks a significant shift from previous links with Juventus and various Premier League clubs.

Despite Dortmund’s keen interest, a formal agreement with Manchester City has not yet been reached. The German club is still in negotiations, and City is awaiting a concrete offer for Couto. Given that City initially paid around £5 million for him, they are now optimistic about making a substantial profit on his sale.

Couto’s recent success has also seen him earn a call-up to the Brazilian national team, where he has accumulated four caps since making his debut last year. As transfer discussions continue, the focus remains on whether Dortmund can finalize a deal that will see Couto make a significant move away from Manchester City and into the next phase of his burgeoning career.
