Leeds United centre-back Max Wöber is expected to leave this summer and his exit could be completed as early as this week with advanced talks progressing with Werder Bremen.

Daniel Farke has already addressed his centre-back options this summer with two shrewd signings of Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw – for a combined £20million.

These five options that Leeds now have means the writing is on the wall for Austrian Max Wöber, who was unable to win over the fans and seemingly Farke after returning from his Bundesliga loan, now set to return to Germany.

Max Wöber in advanced talks to join Werder Bremen on permanent deal

During the June international break, Wöber revealed to the media that he has been told by the 49ers that he will be sold this summer, off the back of promotion back to the Premier League after an injury-hit campaign.

Now, German outlet Bild reveal that the centre-back is now in advanced talks to move to Werder Bremen, with the fee claimed to be a lower seven-figure fee.

Werder Bremen are the only club in the Bundesliga yet to make a signing for this summer window, but that will soon change with Leeds’ expendable 27-year-old.

Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg has since reported that the deal is considered “done” between the clubs and player, expected to be confirmed potentially before the weekend.

The exact fee Leeds are set to bring in for Wöber is unclear, but after joining the club for £11million in January 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year deal, the defender’s book value stands at an estimated £4.9million, meaning anything below that sum would represent a loss on PSR terms.

However, a bonus of selling Wöber is that his reported £35,000-per-week wages would be cleared from the bill, which could save the club around £3.64million.

He’s still not forgiven for how he jumped ship during Farke’s pre-season, and the mixed reception he got after the Bristol City win when the club secured promotion was proof of that.

Like many others, Wöber will be looking to the 2026 World Cup with anticipation of taking part, but “rotting” on Leeds’ bench (his own words) won’t help him at all.
