Hansi Flick Wants to Bring Ivan Perisic to Barça to Reinforce the Left-Back

Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s new manager, is reportedly keen on signing veteran winger Ivan Perišić to strengthen the left-back position. The Croatian international, known for his crossing, shooting, and defensive abilities, could provide a short-term solution for the Catalan club. Perišić became a free agent in August 2024 after mutually terminating his contract with Hajduk Split due to tensions with coach Gennaro Gattuso.
His availability sparked interest from several clubs, including Barcelona. Flick, who previously worked with Perišić at Bayern Munich, is said to have personally contacted the player to discuss a potential move. The 35-year-old’s experience and versatility make him an attractive low-cost option for Barça.
Initially, Barcelona had prioritized signing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, but negotiations stalled. As a result, the club explored alternatives, with Perišić emerging as a viable candidate. Reports from Mundo Deportivo and beIN Sports highlighted Flick’s influence in pushing for the move. However, despite the initial interest, Barcelona ultimately decided against signing Perišić. Concerns over his age and wage demands led the club to shift focus to other targets, such as Kingsley Coman or Liverpool’s Luis Díaz.
Fan reactions were mixed, with some supporters drawing parallels to past short-term signings like Kevin-Prince Boateng. Others believed Perišić could have been a useful rotational player under Flick’s system. The Croatian’s potential move generated buzz, especially after reports claimed he left Hajduk Split because Barcelona had shown interest. Yet, the club’s hierarchy opted for a different direction in their transfer strategy. In the end, Barça’s decision reflects their cautious approach to squad building,
balancing immediate needs with long-term planning. While Perišić’s arrival would have added experience, the club preferred younger alternatives. This situation highlights the challenges Barcelona faces in the transfer market as they aim to rebuild competitively while managing financial constraints. Flick’s influence remains key, but not all of his preferred targets may materialize. As the summer window progresses, Barcelona’s search for reinforcements continues, with left-back and left-wing positions still under scrutiny.
The Perišić saga serves as another chapter in their ongoing squad restructuring efforts.
