Hansi Flick has made a decisive call regarding Marc-André ter Stegen, opting to exclude the goalkeeper from his plans due to concerns over the player’s attitude following his return from injury. Reports indicate that Ter Stegen’s agent reached out to Barcelona’s sporting director,
Deco, insisting the player was fully fit and demanding his inclusion in the squad for the Inter match. This demand reportedly frustrated Flick, who chose not to register him, favoring Wojciech Szczęsny instead. The tension escalated when Ter Stegen refused to travel with the team to Italy, despite other injured players, such as Jules Koundé, making the trip.
This act further strained relations between the goalkeeper and the coaching staff. Barcelona had already been evaluating Ter Stegen’s future, but his recent behavior has accelerated their decision. Flick and the technical staff were particularly displeased with his insistence on playing immediately after recovery, viewing it as disruptive.
The situation also caused friction within the dressing room, with Ter Stegen’s public and private demands creating unrest among teammates. Flick perceived his actions as an attempt to pressure the coaching staff, damaging their professional relationship.
While Barcelona will not force Ter Stegen out of the club, his role has been significantly diminished. He will only feature if both Joan García and Szczęsny are unavailable, effectively making him third choice. This move marks a bold statement from Flick, who is keen on establishing discipline and hierarchy within the squad.
The German manager is not afraid to make tough decisions, even when involving key players. Ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona now appears uncertain. With the club open to his departure, a summer exit could be on the cards if a suitable offer arrives. Fans have been divided over the decision, with some supporting Flick’s authority while others question the handling of a long-serving player.
The situation highlights Flick’s determination to reshape the squad according to his vision, even if it means parting ways with established stars. As the summer transfer window progresses, all eyes will be on whether Ter Stegen remains at Camp Nou or seeks a new challenge elsewhere.
