Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has shown a clear preference for consistency in his defensive choices, often relying on Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana to anchor his backline. However, with defenders like Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo failing to meet expectations, Maresca is keen to add another central defender to bolster his squad. According to Portuguese media outlet *O Jogo*, Chelsea have identified Benfica’s 22-year-old Tomas Araujo as a top target.

Araujo, whose contract includes a release clause of £83 million, has drawn interest from several Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace and Newcastle United. While it is unclear whether Benfica will insist on the full clause or be open to negotiations, Chelsea will need to meet both Araujo’s significant wage demands and Benfica’s asking price if they are to secure the transfer.

Araujo is regarded for his physical attributes, passing ability, and versatility—he can also play as a right-back. His pace, aerial dominance, and effectiveness in set-pieces make him an ideal candidate for Chelsea’s defensive needs. The signing of Araujo would provide the club with a reliable, modern defender capable of fitting seamlessly into Maresca’s tactical system.

Despite Araujo’s potential, Chelsea’s defensive priorities remain uncertain. The club could opt for a defender with proven Premier League experience, such as Marc Guehi or Jarrad Branthwaite, who may be available next year. The decision will likely hinge on Maresca’s long-term vision for the squad, as well as Chelsea’s willingness to invest in Araujo, a relatively untested talent at the highest level.

With competition from other clubs, Chelsea will need to act swiftly if they are to win the race for Araujo’s signature.
