Chelsea Eyes £83 Million Viktor Gyökeres as Potential Nkunku Replacement
Chelsea is reportedly preparing to activate an £83 million release clause for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, who has been compared to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. The Swedish forward is seen as a dynamic addition to Chelsea’s already potent attacking lineup, which has been bolstered by major investments from owner Todd Boehly.
Under manager Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s attack has been one of the strongest in the Premier League this season. The Blues have been spearheaded by Cole Palmer, whose 12 goal contributions in his first 11 league games have already justified his £40 million price tag. Alongside Palmer, Chelsea boasts a range of attacking talents including Mykhailo Mudryk, João Félix, Noni Madueke, Nicolas Jackson, and Pedro Neto, with the latter recently scoring his first Premier League goal against Arsenal.
However, Christopher Nkunku’s future at Stamford Bridge is uncertain. The French forward, who joined Chelsea for £52 million from RB Leipzig, has been limited to just 155 minutes in the Premier League this season due to injuries and inconsistent form. Although he has netted ten goals across all competitions, Nkunku’s frustration with his reduced role has led to speculation that he may seek a move in January, with Manchester United reportedly showing interest.
In response, Chelsea is looking at Gyökeres, who has impressed with his performances for Sporting CP, particularly in the Champions League. The 25-year-old has a strong goal-scoring record and has been praised for his progressive play, averaging 1.3 goals per 90 minutes this season. His ability to create shots and carry the ball forward makes him a promising target for Chelsea, who may see him as the ideal striker to complement or replace Nkunku in the long run.
Gyökeres has been highly regarded in the football world, with former player Rafael van der Vaart describing him as a “better version of Haaland.” His potential arrival would add further firepower to Chelsea’s title ambitions, offering a proven striker to help them compete at the highest level.
