Celtic and Rangers told to agree Calvert-Lewin deal – ‘it would be brilliant’

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has called time on his Everton career and is now available as a free agent following the expiry of his contract.

The 28-year-old revealed in a statement last week that he had made the “incredibly difficult decision” to leave the Toffees.

Calvert-Lewin made 273 appearances for Everton, scoring 71 goals in nine years at Goodison Park.

He will be well known to Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy, who are now in place at Rangers as the club’s new recruitment chiefs.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Celtic and Rangers should now be taking a look at a free transfer move for Calvert-Lewin.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted both Celtic and Rangers could bank a big profit on Calvert-Lewin if they bring him back to form in Glasgow.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (30 June) that Newcastle and Fulham are among the teams ready to step up talks with the England international and advance their interest over the next few weeks.

Wyness claimed Calvert-Lewin will have crossed the minds of the Old Firm rivals.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Celtic or Rangers – and particularly Rangers – would be brilliant for him.

“I think to get the European games under his belt and also to score regularly will get his form back. Both those clubs would be able to get a great player and then they’d be able to sell him on at a much bigger price when he gets back in form.

“Celtic or Rangers should be considering him. I think he’d be an interesting one. Russell Martin at Rangers will know about him.

“I’m sure that he’ll have crossed their thoughts. With Kevin Thelwell and the other Everton people behind the scenes at Rangers, you’d have thought they might have just had an interest in getting that going.

“It would remind me of going back to the days for Rangers of the old Terry Butcher, Gazza era. I think Calvert Lewin could be that sort of hero for Rangers again.”

Rangers open talks to sign League One star

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (25 June) that Rangers have opened talks to sign Peterborough defender Emmanuel Fernandez.

Fernandez was wanted by Norwich in the January window but ended up staying at League One outfit Peterborough for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

The 23-year-old made 42 appearances across all competitions for the Posh in the 2024-25 campaign, starting in 39 of those outings.
