BREAKING: Arsenal Rocked by Defensive Injury Crisis Ahead of Champions League Clash with Real Madrid

Arsenal’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League have been dealt a significant blow after a series of devastating injuries hit their defensive ranks. The Gunners, preparing for a crucial quarter-final tie against Real Madrid, now find themselves without several key defenders at a pivotal moment in the season.
The North London club’s injury woes began during the international break when Riccardo Calafiori suffered a knee injury while representing Italy. The setback, sustained in a match against Germany, saw the talented defender limp off the pitch in visible pain. Following scans and an early return to Arsenal for further assessment, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed that Calafiori would be out for “weeks.”
If that wasn’t troubling enough, Ben White joined the growing list of casualties after picking up a knee issue during training on Monday. White, an integral part of Arteta’s backline, was forced to sit out Arsenal’s clash with Fulham on Tuesday night, leaving the team further exposed defensively.
Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal when Gabriel and Jurrien Timber both suffered injuries during the hard-fought 2-1 victory over Fulham. Gabriel, who has been one of the club’s most consistent defenders this season, pulled up with a suspected hamstring injury just 15 minutes into the match. He was immediately substituted, leaving fans and teammates concerned about his availability for the upcoming fixtures.
Speaking after the game, Arteta admitted that Gabriel’s injury looked serious. “Gabi felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know how big that is,” the Arsenal boss revealed. Club legend Ian Wright weighed in on the situation, speculating that Gabriel could be out for six weeks or more, potentially missing the rest of the season.
Adding to the misery, Timber, who had recently recovered from a lengthy injury layoff, was also forced off against Fulham. The Dutch defender initially tried to continue playing after a knee-to-knee collision with an opponent but eventually had to leave the field. Arteta later confirmed that Timber had been struggling from early in the match and that his condition would need to be assessed further.
With the injuries piling up, Arsenal now face an uphill battle heading into a defining period of their season. The timing could not be worse, with a tricky Premier League fixture against Everton coming up before the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid next week.
In some positive news, Bukayo Saka made a triumphant return from injury, coming off the bench to score the winning goal against Fulham. It was his first appearance in 2025, and his presence will be crucial for Arsenal’s attacking ambitions moving forward.
As for the rest of the squad, the injury situation remains bleak. Arteta provided updates on each player’s expected recovery timeline:
- Gabriel: The Brazilian’s injury is still being assessed, but early indications suggest he could be sidelined for several weeks. His availability for the Real Madrid tie remains in serious doubt.
- Jurrien Timber: Timber’s knee injury is under evaluation, and no official return date has been set. Given his history with injuries, Arsenal will likely proceed with caution.
- Riccardo Calafiori: The Italian defender is expected to miss at least a few weeks, with a potential return in May if his recovery goes well.
- Ben White: The extent of White’s knee issue is unclear, and Arsenal are awaiting further tests before confirming his return date.
Beyond the defensive crisis, Arsenal also remain without key figures in other positions. Kai Havertz, who underwent surgery for a serious hamstring injury last month, is out for the remainder of the season. The German international sustained the injury while blocking a shot during a training session in Dubai. His absence will leave a significant gap in Arsenal’s attacking midfield options.
Similarly, Gabriel Jesus is another long-term absentee, having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in January’s FA Cup clash against Manchester United. The Brazilian underwent surgery and will not return until the summer.
Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has featured just once this season due to persistent injury setbacks, remains on the sidelines. The Japanese defender underwent knee surgery in February and is not expected back until late 2025.
With so many key players unavailable, Arsenal’s depth will be severely tested in the coming weeks. The Gunners are still in contention for multiple trophies, but their ability to compete at the highest level will depend on how they navigate this injury crisis.
The club’s medical team faces an immense challenge in getting players fit as quickly as possible. Arsenal fans will be hoping for positive updates in the coming days, especially concerning Gabriel and Timber, whose presence will be critical against Real Madrid.
The defensive crisis also raises questions about Arteta’s tactical adjustments. With limited options at the back, the manager may have to tweak his formation or rely on makeshift defenders to get through this crucial stretch of the season. Youngsters from the academy could also be called upon to step up in these trying times.
As Arsenal brace themselves for a season-defining period, the injury list serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that come with competing on multiple fronts. The road ahead is daunting, but if there is one thing Arteta’s squad has demonstrated this season, it is resilience in the face of adversity.
With Real Madrid looming on the horizon, Arsenal will need every ounce of determination, tactical discipline, and squad depth to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
