’49ers have questions at Leeds United’ as Wober exits after pointless transfer

Leeds United have sent Max Wober to Werder Bremen on a season-long loan this summer transfer window.

The Austria international will play in the Bundesliga for the 2025/26 campaign after struggling for game time in LS11.

Daniel Farke didn’t rely on Wober much last season, and it isn’t surprising to see him seal an exit from the Whites.

Although the Elland Road faithful may have questions for 49ers Enterprises after they decide to send the 27-year-old centre-back on a temporary move.

Leeds may be questioned by many for not selling Wober permanently, Adam Pope says.

The BBC Sport journalist seems confused why the Whites haven’t got the Austrian defender off their books at Elland Road.

Pope feels it’s been clear that the 27-year-old has no future in LS11 and branded the centre-back the “most pointless transfer of all time”.

Speaking on Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet, via BBC Sport West Yorkshire on X (10 July), the journalist said: “The big question for many is why haven’t they sold [Wober] and just got him off the books. It was clear last year, even when he was fit, there was no future for him under Farke at Leeds, and certainly not in the Premier League.

“It’s the most pointless transfer of all time in the sense that he hasn’t really contributed to Leeds.”

Wober exit inevitable after defensive transfers at Leeds

Leeds have bolstered their defence with Jaka Bijol this summer, and Sebastiaan Bornauw has also arrived to provide depth at centre-back.

Following Junior Firpo’s departure, the Whites have signed former LOSC Lille left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson, while Sam Byram has extended his contract.

Wober would’ve undoubtedly faced extreme competition for regular minutes had he stayed at the West Yorkshire outfit.

Farke did play the Austria international at left-back on occasion last season, but with Gudmundsson’s arrival, that might not have been a possibility in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old signed for the Whites in January 2023 from Red Bull Salzburg, but joined Borussia Monchengladbach on loan after relegation.

Wober’s decision to leave after the West Yorkshire outfit dropped down to the Championship didn’t please many fans, and he should’ve arguably been sold last summer.
