Wolves may have found the perfect Nelson Semedo replacement, the stats are very impressive

There are still a lot of unknowns in the summer transfer window for Wolves, and one of those involves the future of Nelson Semedo.

Semedo’s Wolves contract expired on June 30, and the Portuguese right-back is now technically a free agent after five years at Molineux.

Wolves placed a four-year contract on the table for Semedo, and those terms are still valid, but Vitor Pereira still doesn’t know his final decision.

While the Old Gold would love to keep their captain, there are several replacements in mind. Wolves have opened talks with Almeria for defender Marc Pubill, and Jeremy Toljan is another name on their radar, along with former Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters.

As it stands, no formal offer has been made for any right-back to fill Semedo’s void, though another talent has emerged as an option.

Wolves are interested in Georgios Vagiannidis

According to the Record, Wolves and Everton are strongly considering a move for Panathinaikos right-back Georgios Vagiannidis.

The Greek defender also has interest from Sporting CP, who have seen a £10 million bid rejected for the player, with Panathinaikos holding out for £13 million.

Vagiannidis was part of the Panathinaikos side that competed in the Europa Conference League last term, with the 23-year-old making 39 appearances in all competitions and assisting three times.

Most Wolves fans will be unaware of the quality the right-sided defender possesses, but earlier in his career, talent scout Jacek Kulig compared Vagiannidis to former Manchester City speedster Kyle Walker.

As a fast, aggressive and attacking full-back, Vagiannidis could fit perfectly into Pereira’s system, as the Portuguese boss requires his wing-backs to have the energy to get up and down the pitch.

Semedo had no issue doing that last term and arguably played his best football in a Wolves shirt. However, with the 31-year-old heading for the exit door, the Greek defender is a possible replacement.

How Vagiannidis compares to Nelson Semedo

Pereira wants to keep Semedo, and the fans want him to stay. But all good things must come to an end, and the Portuguese international will need a successor to his throne.

As highlighted by FBref, Vagiannidis has averaged 2.25 progressive carries to Semedo’s 2.09 in the past year and also bettered him for successful take-ons (1.31/1.00).

Vagiannidis is eight years younger than the Wolves stalwart, which is encouraging as he also has room to improve and become a more polished version of himself.

The data behind both players’ performances is equally backed up by Vagiannidis winning more duels per game and making more final third entries, while Semedo betters him for tackles per game and ball recoveries.

In an ideal world, Wolves would sign the Panathinaikos star as competition for their captain but currently, it’s looking like he would be a worthy replacement.
