Sam Allardyce Slams Jamie Carragher Over “Pathetic” Criticism of Mohamed Salah
Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has launched a fiery response to Jamie Carragher’s recent critique of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, branding the pundit’s comments “pathetic.” Carragher claimed Salah’s legs had “gone,” pointing to the Egyptian’s dip in form this season. But Allardyce, who has managed top-flight stars for years, quickly dismissed the notion, insisting Salah remains one of the Premier League’s most lethal forwards.
Salah has struggled this campaign, with just five goals and three assists in 19 appearances—a stark contrast to last season’s 34-goal, 23-assist haul that helped Liverpool clinch the title. Manager Arne Slot has even benched the 33-year-old in recent matches, including a 2-0 win over West Ham and a 1-1 draw with Sunderland. Despite a new two-year contract, speculation about Salah’s form and future at Anfield continues to swirl.

Carragher’s comments came after assessing Liverpool’s struggles, citing injuries to key players and the aging of the squad’s spine. Allardyce fired back during the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, questioning how Salah’s legs could suddenly fail after a summer break and emphasizing that other players are also going through tough spells. “Stop it. He should know better. That’s an absolutely pathetic statement,” Allardyce said.
This isn’t the first time Salah and Carragher have clashed. Earlier this year, the former Liverpool defender criticized Salah during his contract saga, prompting a sharp reply from the Egyptian: “I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me.” While the pair reconciled after Salah signed a new deal, Carragher has continued to scrutinize Salah’s performances, raising questions about the impact of his £400,000-a-week contract on his form.
Despite the criticism, Salah is well-equipped to prove doubters wrong. With his skill, experience, and proven goal-scoring ability, he has everything needed to rediscover the form that made him a club legend. As history shows, even when pundits write off world-class players, great talents like Salah often respond on the pitch, reminding fans and critics alike why they remain indispensable.
