Liverpool Backed To Let First Team Starter Leave After He Left Arne Slot ‘Raging’

Arne Slot may be forced into a major decision over his Liverpool starting XI following the fallout from their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Several first-team regulars have come under heavy criticism for inconsistent performances, with Ibrahima Konate among those singled out.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown has revealed that Liverpool are increasingly concerned about Konate’s future, especially after he struggled badly against Jean-Philippe Mateta. His error-strewn display has intensified doubts about his long-term role alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence.
Talks over a new contract for Konate began earlier this month, but little progress has been made. Following his poor showing against Palace, Liverpool are now said to be considering a U-turn, with Brown suggesting the club are open to letting the Frenchman leave. He told Football Insider that the Reds would sanction his exit if a suitable replacement could be secured.
Liverpool attempted to sign Marc Guehi in the summer as a potential partner for Van Dijk, but the deal fell through. That failure has left Konate still playing a key role, though his repeated mistakes are testing Slot’s patience. Brown believes the Liverpool boss was “raging” with the defender after the Palace defeat, insisting that every player must deliver consistent performances if the club are to challenge for major trophies.
The Reds have already invested heavily in their attack and midfield, signing Alexander Isak for £125million and Florian Wirtz for £110million. Now, defensive reinforcements are the priority. Brown expects Liverpool to move for a new centre-back in the January window, a move that could pave the way for Konate’s exit—possibly to Real Madrid, who remain keen on the 25-year-old.
Liverpool’s defensive situation has been further complicated by Giovanni Leoni’s long-term injury. The setback has accelerated their plans to recruit another defender, with Guehi once again emerging as the leading target. Out of contract at the end of the year, the Crystal Palace captain could be available on a free transfer, and Liverpool are eager to beat rivals to his signature.
For now, Slot must rely on Konate, Van Dijk, and Joe Gomez as his only senior centre-backs—a scenario that has raised concerns within the club. While Guehi remains their first choice, the Reds are also assessing five alternative centre-back options as they prepare for a crucial winter transfer window.
