Manchester United has initiated a new survey involving residents and community members in the decision-making process regarding the redevelopment of Old Trafford. This initiative is part of the club’s efforts to ensure that local opinions are central to the regeneration plans for the iconic stadium’s surrounding area.
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a co-owner of the club in February, the future of Old Trafford has been a major topic of discussion among supporters. Ratcliffe has expressed his desire to construct a modern, state-of-the-art stadium and the club is reportedly planning to propose a new venue with a capacity of 100,000 seats. However, no definitive plans have been finalized, and Manchester United is currently seeking input from its fanbase and the local community.
The latest survey, released this week, allows residents and community groups in Trafford and nearby areas to share their perspectives and contribute to shaping the redevelopment plans. This consultation marks the beginning of a comprehensive community engagement process, which will include focus group meetings with local businesses, institutions, and community organizations.
Following the survey and focus groups, the club plans to hold open days at Old Trafford in December. These events will allow community members to attend, learn more about the proposed project, and offer their ideas directly.
Tom Ross, leader of Trafford Council, emphasized the importance of widespread community input: “It is critical we hear from as many residents and community members as possible during this process to ensure we can capture all their views as we begin to shape the plans for regenerating the area around the stadium. This important survey is the first stage of our wider public consultation and will be followed by focus groups and in-person consultation sessions to make sure the voice of the local community is at the heart of our approach and decision-making process.”
The survey has been developed in collaboration with the Cathie Marsh Institute at the University of Manchester to ensure that the questions are appropriately framed and meet industry standards. Completing the survey should take no more than ten minutes, and responses are due by 11:59 PM on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
