Barcelona is reportedly preparing to offer midfielder Frenkie de Jong a new contract that includes a significant pay cut. The 27-year-old Dutch international’s current deal, set to expire in June 2026, carries a substantial salary that the financially constrained club aims to reduce. Negotiations have been ongoing, with both parties expressing a willingness to reach an agreement.

De Jong has consistently expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona, a sentiment echoed by his agent, Ali Dursun, who recently dismissed rumors linking the midfielder to a move to Saudi Arabia as “absurd.” Dursun emphasized that De Jong’s priority is to continue at the club he loves, suggesting an openness to contract renewal discussions.

However, the proposed salary reduction remains a point of contention. Barcelona’s financial challenges necessitate adjustments to their wage structure, and De Jong’s high earnings have been a focal point. While the club is optimistic about reaching an agreement, De Jong’s camp has indicated that any reduction must be reasonable and reflect his value to the team.

Complicating matters, De Jong’s market value has declined over the past year, dropping from €90 million to €60 million. This depreciation could influence both the player’s bargaining position and the club’s urgency to secure his future at a reduced cost.

La Liga regulations also play a role in this scenario. League president Javier Tebas has previously stated that clubs cannot unilaterally impose salary reductions on players, underscoring the importance of mutual agreement in such negotiations. This legal framework ensures that any adjustment to De Jong’s contract must be consensual.

As discussions continue, both Barcelona and De Jong are keen to find a resolution that satisfies the club’s financial constraints while honoring the player’s contributions and commitment. The outcome of these negotiations will significantly impact Barcelona’s squad planning and financial health in the coming seasons.
