‘We Are Not’: Maresca Dismisses Chelsea Title Chances Despite Closing the Gap
Liverpool’s once comfortable lead at the top of the Premier League has come under increasing pressure, with Chelsea narrowing the gap to just two points following their latest victory over Brentford.
While the Reds still hold a game in hand, the London club’s impressive form cannot be ignored.
Chelsea have now won five consecutive matches and remain unbeaten in their last 10 games. Such form has sparked conversations about their title credentials, but manager Enzo Maresca was quick to downplay expectations.
Speaking after the win, the former Leicester City boss firmly rejected suggestions that Chelsea could challenge for the Premier League crown. Maresca said:
“It’s not about how many games we win. It’s about being realistic. There are things we have to do better. That’s why I said, for me, we are not ready. The fans, they can dream and think. But us inside as a club, as a squad, as players, as coaching staff, we need to be realistic.”
While the Italian’s remarks could be seen as honest reflection, they may also be a deliberate tactic to alleviate mounting pressure on his squad.
Are Chelsea Genuine Title Contenders?
Despite Maresca’s attempts to manage expectations, Chelsea’s current league position cannot be ignored. Their run of results has placed them firmly in the conversation, especially with Liverpool’s recent draws and fixture postponements creating opportunities for the chasing pack.
However, Liverpool’s game in hand—against rivals Everton in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park—adds another layer of intrigue. While pundits, including Sam Allardyce, continue to back Liverpool as favorites to reclaim the title, the unpredictability of the Premier League leaves no guarantees.
For now, Maresca’s efforts to deflect attention are commendable, but the spotlight on Chelsea will only grow with each passing win. As the season progresses, both pressure and expectation will mount, regardless of the manager’s rhetoric.
