BREAKING: Premier League Referee David Coote Sacked Following Controversial Comments and Allegations
Premier League referee David Coote has been dismissed after a series of controversies, including offensive remarks about Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and alleged footage of him engaging in inappropriate behavior.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) initiated an investigation after videos surfaced on November 11, showing Coote making expletive-laden comments about Klopp and allegedly using what appeared to be a white substance. Following the probe, PGMOL deemed his position “untenable” and terminated his employment immediately.
In a statement released on Monday, PGMOL confirmed the decision, emphasizing, “David Coote’s actions were in serious breach of his employment contract.” The organization, however, assured continued support for Coote during this challenging period and highlighted his right to appeal the termination.
The controversies surrounding Coote extend beyond his remarks about Klopp. The Football Association (FA) is also investigating allegations that Coote discussed issuing a yellow card prior to officiating a Championship game between Leeds and West Brom in 2019. Coote has strongly denied these claims, calling them “false and defamatory” while insisting that his personal issues have never influenced his professional conduct.
The scandal escalated after the release of a second video, reportedly from the summer’s European Championship, which featured Coote criticizing Klopp with derogatory remarks. Additionally, footage suggested Coote and another individual violated COVID-19 protocols, sitting closely and mocking social distancing measures.
Coote, who began officiating in the Premier League in 2018 and refereed the 2023 Carabao Cup final, now faces separate investigations by the FA and UEFA. Despite his dismissal, the PGMOL has stressed its commitment to providing necessary support for Coote as he navigates this personal and professional crisis.
