Badiashile’s Chelsea Stint: A £35M Gamble That May Be Running Out of Time
When Todd Boehly assumed ownership of Chelsea in May 2022, few could predict the unprecedented wave of transfers that would redefine the club’s roster.
With a staggering £1.2 billion spent on signings under his leadership, Chelsea aimed to strike a balance between immediate success and long-term promise.
Yet, for every triumph like Nicolas Jackson or Moises Caicedo, there have been signings that failed to justify their hefty price tags. Benoit Badiashile appears to be a glaring example of the latter.
A Promising Arrival That Fizzled Out
Signed for £35 million from Monaco in January 2023, Badiashile arrived with glowing reviews, touted by Boehly as an “excellent young player.” However, the French center-back has struggled to establish himself in the squad.
Now in his second season, Badiashile has managed only 44 appearances in all competitions, and his Premier League contributions have dwindled to just 157 minutes this campaign.
Reduced to Europa Conference League duties under Enzo Maresca, the 23-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge looks increasingly uncertain.
The Numbers Don’t Add Up
On a reported £90,000-a-week salary, Badiashile’s lack of impact has sparked criticism.
While Chelsea initially envisioned him as a pillar of their defense, pundits like Gabby Agbonlahor have labeled his tenure as “dreadful.”
The defender’s inability to cement a starting role underlines a broader challenge within the squad: balancing a bloated roster while meeting expectations.
Calls for Change
Frank Lampard recently suggested that Chelsea might be better off parting ways with Badiashile in the upcoming transfer window.
At 23, the player still has potential to reignite his career elsewhere, but his current trajectory risks stagnation.
For Chelsea, offloading him could free up resources and make room for reinforcements better suited to Maresca’s system.
While Todd Boehly’s spending spree has delivered some notable successes, Badiashile’s case serves as a reminder of the risks inherent in high-stakes transfers.
Whether the young defender can find redemption or move on to greener pastures remains to be seen, but time is running out for both player and club to salvage their investment.
