Slot Faces Growing Pressure as Murphy Warns of Impending Consequences
Danny Murphy has issued a stark warning to Liverpool manager Arne Slot, insisting that the Dutchman risks losing his job unless he makes decisive changes to his squad. The former Liverpool midfielder expressed deep concern over the team’s current trajectory and the visible drop in performance levels compared to last season.
Murphy highlighted that only a handful of players — including Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Andy Robertson, and academy prospect Ngumoha — have shown anything close to last season’s standard. According to him, the majority of the squad has failed to match previous intensity and ambition, with mentality and physical sharpness noticeably lacking after last year’s success.
He emphasized that the issue extends beyond tactical problems, pointing to a broader psychological complacency within the squad. Murphy argued that winning can sometimes dull hunger, and Liverpool’s current struggles suggest that too many players have lost the edge required to compete at the highest level.
Murphy also scrutinized Liverpool’s recent transfer activity, noting that among the club’s major new signings, only Hugo Ekitike has made a meaningful impact. He believes that this underperformance, compounded by declining standards from established players, demands accountability from within the dressing room.
Turning his attention to Slot, Murphy insisted that the manager must now make bold, uncomfortable decisions. This includes dropping high-profile names if they are not meeting performance demands and prioritizing players who demonstrate physicality, work rate, and defensive discipline.
He stressed that Slot must rebuild Liverpool’s foundation by focusing on fundamentals: defending with organization, working harder than the opponent, and restoring the team’s physical intensity. Murphy believes these simple yet essential principles are the fastest route back to stability.
Murphy concluded with a blunt warning: if Liverpool continue losing matches without visible improvement, Slot’s position will quickly come under serious threat. In his view, the manager must act immediately to reverse the decline and restore the standards expected at Anfield.
