Florian Wirtz Has Struggled To Adapt To Life In England – And One Liverpool FC Star Can Make Things Easier For Him.

Florian Wirtz’s big-money move to Liverpool was one of the most talked-about transfers of the summer. The 22-year-old joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a British record fee, and expectations were sky-high following his outstanding years in the Bundesliga. However, his start to life in the Premier League has been less convincing, with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher stressing that the Reds must do more to unlock his full potential.

The German playmaker has yet to register a goal or assist in the league, with his last contribution coming in the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace. While Wirtz is still adapting, Carragher believes the team has not done enough to help him settle. He points to Alexis Mac Allister’s own struggles this season as a factor that has limited Wirtz’s impact, with the Argentine not providing the kind of service that could bring the best out of his new teammate.

One of the stark differences in Wirtz’s game since moving to Anfield has been his involvement on the ball. At Liverpool, he averages just 64 touches per game, compared to 87 in 2024/25 and 92 the season before at Leverkusen. Carragher insists this shows Wirtz is not being found in the right positions often enough, reducing his influence in the final third.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher highlighted both the expectations and the challenges. “He has come in as a Bundesliga player of the year, a champion with Leverkusen, and a German international. Of course, we should be analysing his performances. But Liverpool also have to do more for him. He’s not getting the ball as often as before, and that has to change,” he explained.

The pace and physicality of the Premier League have also been noticeable hurdles for Wirtz. Against Newcastle away, Carragher described it as a “baptism of fire” in midfield, while even in games against lower-ranked teams like Burnley, the German has struggled to find space to operate. Opponents are closing him down quicker, not allowing him the same time he enjoyed in the Bundesliga.

Carragher also believes that Mac Allister holds the key to Wirtz’s turnaround. “I think Mac Allister can be the one to feed him between the lines and get him more involved,” he said. “If Mac Allister gets back to his best, Wirtz will benefit, and Liverpool will see the player they invested in.”

Despite the slow start, there is no doubt about Wirtz’s quality. He is still adjusting to a new league, a different pace of football, and the demands of being Liverpool’s record signing. Carragher’s message is clear: while Wirtz must adapt, Liverpool also have a responsibility to support him better on the pitch. If they strike the right balance, the German could yet become the creative force many expected him to be at Anfield.
