Speaking after the game, Amorim admitted his side were second-best throughout and criticised their inability to stick to their game plan. “It’s always the same to lose at this club; it hurts a lot. We need to think about the next one. Of course, we want to win, but we didn’t control the game. We played Brentford’s game — first balls, second balls, set-pieces — and all the crucial moments went against us,” he told Manchester Evening News.

Last season ended without European football, and this campaign has already seen an early EFL Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby. With three league defeats already on the board, including against Arsenal and Manchester City, the club has reportedly issued Amorim an ultimatum: improve results quickly or face the sack.
