Javier Tebas Slams Club World Cup as “Complete Fiasco” Amid Growing Backlash

La Liga president Javier Tebas has launched a scathing attack on the new format of the FIFA Club World Cup, branding it a “complete fiasco.” Speaking out strongly, Tebas emphasized the growing opposition from players, clubs, and domestic leagues, all of whom feel overwhelmed by the packed football calendar. His comments come as FIFA prepares to roll out an expanded Club World Cup, featuring 32 teams, set to take place every four years starting in 2025.

Tebas expressed deep concern about how the competition disrupts the traditional football schedule. “Schedules are wrecked,” he stated, underlining the strain it puts on players who already endure a demanding workload across domestic and international competitions. With top clubs committed to multiple tournaments year-round, the Club World Cup adds another intense layer to an already congested calendar.

The La Liga president didn’t stop there. He argued that the expanded tournament harms the overall structure of global football, especially for smaller leagues and federations struggling to keep up. Tebas warned that the professional football ecosystem is “severely damaged” by such decisions, as they prioritize commercial gain over sporting integrity and player welfare.

Players’ unions and various football governing bodies have echoed similar sentiments, warning of the long-term risks posed by an oversaturated calendar. Fatigue, increased injury risks, and lack of adequate rest have become central talking points as stakeholders continue to debate the balance between competition and care for athletes.

Tebas has long been a vocal critic of FIFA’s influence on club football, and his latest remarks are likely to fuel further discussions between domestic leagues and the sport’s global governing body. With mounting opposition from within the football world, the future of the Club World Cup and its role in the international calendar remains a contentious issue heading into 2025.
