Jamie Vardy’s free transfer ‘vetoed’ after Leicester City exit

Jamie Vardy has missed out on a move to Serie A outfit Genoa, according to a report.

Website Football Italia claim reports in La Repubblica say the Leicester City legend was very close to joining Genoa following his departure from the King Power.

However, it is alleged that Genoa’s head coach Patrick Vieira ‘vetoed’ the deal with Football Italia claiming the former Arsenal and Man City midfielder was ‘not convinced’.

They add that it was sporting director Flavio Ricciardella who tried to agree terms with the 38-year-old, with sponsors claimed to be willing to cover his wages.

Vardy’s exact destination, after ending a 13-year City career, is not yet known. He has been linked with Wrexham and Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers but is likely to have offers from all over the world given his goal-scoring exploits for the Foxes.

Vieira saved Genoa from relegation after joining them in November last season and his reward for a 13th placed finish was a contract extension until 2025.

Meanwhile City are yet to confirm either Vardy’s replacement, or more pressingly their own new manager, with their pre-season fixtures starting at Seagrave yesterday as Andy King oversaw a 3-1 win over League One Peterborough United.
