Wolves fans are still in the dark over Nelson Semedo, with the wing-back now officially a free agent.

Nelson Semedo is no longer a Wolves player with his deal having just expired, but fans still hope that he’ll sign an extension.

Wolves recently put a four-year offer on the table for Semedo, and it’s still there for him.

But Molineux News has learned Wolves don’t have confidence Semedo will sign, feeling he’s more likely to seal a move abroad.

Semedo has been linked with his old club Benfica, but recently it’s been suggested Besiktas could also be an option for him.

Should Semedo declare that he isn’t signing, then it would mean a very familiar scenario for Wolves of a club captain departing.

And that would be a blow, because Semedo has certainly proved himself as a capable leader in recent times

Nelson Semedo likened to Conor Coady after taking captaincy at Wolves

It is still remarkable looking back on the Mario Lemina situation last season.

Lemina’s scrap with Jarrod Bowen, and then his own teammates, after Wolves’ defeat to West Ham United in December cost the midfielder the captaincy.

Gary O’Neil then chose Semedo as the new skipper, with Lemina leaving the club shortly after.

And to his credit, Semedo really stepped up to the plate in what were probably slightly awkward circumstances, especially while Lemina was actually still there.

Former Old Gold midfielder Dave Edwards has been speaking about Semedo in his latest E&S column, and reckons the Portugal international channelled former captain Conor Coady after taking the armband.

He said: “He is a leader. We know that. The way he took on the captaincy at a really difficult time for Wolves was incredible.

“I think he did it with such dignity. The way he acted while he was in charge was very Conor Coady-esque. I think you need those people at a football club. If there is a one percent chance of him staying then that is brilliant for me.”

Previously, Edwards hailed Semedo’s leadership after seeing the way he conducted himself in the canteen at Wolves’ training ground.

Like many Wolves fans, Edwards is struggling to fathom why there is still no clarity over the Semedo situation.

Pre-season is starting quite soon, and Wolves need to know what the wing-back is going to do, so they can plan accordingly.

Some Wolves fans have felt Semedo has been disrespectful by taking this much time to make a decision, and a few have now called for the contract offer to be rescinded.

In Edwards’ view, the situation is certainly surprising: “He is now officially out of contract, but there is still hope he will sign which I think is incredible.

“I wrote in my columns at the end of the season that I was convinced he would leave Molineux. I was gutted about that, but I knew Wolves had done everything in terms of a contract offer to try and keep him. It is a lucrative offer that must be very appealing for the wing-back.

“It is just a bit of a strange situation because you usually think the fans would be a bit more angry.”
