What James Trafford really expects to happen when he joins Newcastle United

James Trafford described himself as a “world class” goalkeeper in April and that belief in himself could see him hit the ground running at Newcastle United.

Indeed, Newcastle United are close to signing Trafford at long last, having tracked him for almost a year now.

Trafford has agreed personal terms with Newcastle, who are keen to bolster their options in goal despite having several custodians already on the books.

It has been two long years since Newcastle signed a first-team player but, at long last, it seems the club are closing in on a move.

Trafford will have competition at St James’ Park. The Newcastle United squad boasts a number of goalkeepers already, but Nick Pope is certainly the standout figure.

Eddie Howe is a huge fan of Pope, but Trafford appears to be ready to take his spot if and when he does sign.

According to The Northern Echo, Trafford has indicated his desire to join Howe’s side this summer.

He’s coming off a fine season for Burnley in which he conceded only 16 goals in 45 games as Scott Parker’s side won promotion back to the Premier League.

As such, Trafford described himself as “world class” and is duly expecting to start for Newcastle upon his potential arrival, should the clubs agree on a deal.

The report adds that he will be moving to Newcastle with the “expectation” he will start for Howe’s side.

More talks over a fee are expected in the coming days. Newcastle’s £26million for Trafford was rejected by Burnley, but there appears to be a confidence that a breakthrough can finally be made.

Still, the 22-year-old is coming off a remarkable season and the fact Newcastle have chased him for so long would suggest they rate him very highly.

Trafford did beat Pope in most of the key goalkeeping metrics last season, albeit with the caveat he was playing a level below the Newcastle stopper added. The Championship season also has more games than a Premier League campaign.

Over a decade younger than Pope, Trafford has time on his side. He could feasibly be Newcastle’s starting goalkeeper for ten years or more.
