Manchester United Ready to Move On from Andre Onana, Targeting Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make a significant change in their goalkeeping department. The Premier League club is now open to parting ways with Andre Onana, their current number one goalkeeper, just a year after his high-profile arrival from Inter Milan.
Onana’s first season at Old Trafford was filled with mixed performances. While he displayed moments of brilliance and his usual ball-playing confidence, the Cameroonian also came under fire for a string of errors, particularly during United’s Champions League campaign.
Despite managing to steady himself later in the season, Onana never quite managed to win over all the fans or silence critics. His inconsistencies have prompted the club to consider alternatives heading into the new season.
Manchester United have already lined up a possible replacement in Marco Carnesecchi, the talented 24-year-old Italian goalkeeper who currently plays for Atalanta. The young shot-stopper has been on the rise in Serie A and has caught the attention of several top clubs with his composed and mature performances.
Carnesecchi has emerged as one of Italy’s most promising goalkeepers, combining sharp reflexes with solid distribution and strong command of his area. United see him as a player with long-term potential and the right profile to grow into the number one role at a big club.
Reports indicate that Manchester United have already made contact with Atalanta regarding a possible transfer. The Premier League club is said to have £34 million available to spend on securing Carnesecchi’s services. However, Atalanta are holding out for a higher fee. The Italian club reportedly values their goalkeeper between £38 million and £42 million.
Negotiations are expected to continue as both parties try to find common ground.United’s pursuit of Carnesecchi signals a clear intent to reset their goalkeeping department with a younger and potentially more stable presence between the posts. It also reflects a growing desire to build a squad for the long-term, particularly after a turbulent season. If the transfer is finalized, it would likely mean the end of Onana’s short stint in Manchester.
The club is already exploring options to sell the 28-year-old, and any funds recouped would help support the purchase of Carnesecchi.
While Onana’s departure would be surprising given how recently he joined, it underscores the ruthlessness with which top clubs now operate. There is little room for sentiment when performances don’t meet expectations.
For Carnesecchi, a move to Manchester United would represent a massive step in his career. He would be following in the footsteps of other Italian keepers who have taken on major challenges abroad.United fans may have mixed feelings about losing Onana, especially after some of his crucial saves in tight matches.
However, the potential arrival of Carnesecchi brings a sense of fresh hope and renewal at the back. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining how this story unfolds. United must decide whether to meet Atalanta’s demands or walk away from the deal.
Likewise, Atalanta must weigh whether to cash in on their prized goalkeeper now or wait for a bigger offer. Much will also depend on how quickly United can secure a buyer for Onana.
As it stands, the situation is fluid, but what’s clear is that Manchester United are not standing still. Changes are coming, and the goalkeeper position is high on the agenda.
