Neymar Jr., one of the most talented and sought-after footballers of his generation, has finally opened up about one of the biggest decisions of his career—why he chose FC Barcelona over Real Madrid. The Brazilian superstar, who dazzled fans at the Camp Nou from 2013 to 2017, recently reflected on the intense battle between the two Spanish giants for his signature.

In an interview on the podcast “Podpah,” Neymar shared exclusive insights into the offers he received from both clubs and why, despite the financial incentives from Madrid, his heart led him to Barcelona. His revelation has reignited discussions about what could have been had he chosen the Santiago Bernabéu instead.

“I received an offer from both clubs. Barcelona’s proposal was clear, and Real Madrid’s was practically a blank cheque. They told me, ‘Put the paper, and we pay,’” Neymar disclosed. Despite the financial temptation, the Brazilian forward opted for the Catalan side, and the reasoning behind it was deeply personal.

While Real Madrid was willing to offer him a significantly higher salary—three times what Barcelona proposed—Neymar felt a different pull toward the Blaugrana. He admitted, “If I had gone to Real Madrid, I would have earned three times as much as I did at Barcelona. But I followed my heart. My dream was to play for Barcelona.”

The forward’s admiration for the club had been building for years. Inspired by legends like Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, Neymar always envisioned himself donning the iconic Barcelona jersey. “Ronaldinho, Messi… My dream was to play with Messi,” he revealed. “And that’s when I decided to go to Barcelona.”

Neymar’s connection with Barcelona was about more than just football—it was emotional and aspirational. The club’s style of play, its attacking philosophy, and its culture of flair and creativity aligned perfectly with his own skill set. Despite Real Madrid’s financial power, Barcelona’s sporting project resonated more with him.

Interestingly, Neymar’s journey could have taken a different turn much earlier in his career. At the age of 13, he had already spent time at Real Madrid’s youth setup. The Brazilian trained with the club for ten days, impressing coaches and teammates alike. Former Real Madrid technical secretary Ramón Martínez once recalled, “He was something else—like an alien. He dribbled past everyone and scored. Again and again.”

During that trial period, Neymar played alongside future stars such as Dani Carvajal and Pablo Sarabia. Madrid was keen on securing his signature, and everything seemed set. However, one major roadblock emerged—the club hesitated on fulfilling a request from Neymar’s family.

Reports indicate that Real Madrid had reached an agreement with Neymar’s father regarding his salary and registration with the club, but a final demand complicated matters. The family requested that Madrid help purchase a house for Neymar’s grandparents in Brazil, a request worth around €60,000. When the club refused, the transfer collapsed, and Neymar returned to Santos.

The failure to secure him at such a young age would later haunt Madrid. By the time Neymar returned to European negotiations as a senior player, Barcelona had already won his heart. Even Florentino Pérez, Madrid’s president, had always admired Neymar and wanted him at the club, but by then, it was too late.

Neymar’s time at Barcelona turned out to be historic. He won multiple La Liga titles, a Champions League trophy, and numerous domestic cups. Alongside Messi and Luis Suárez, he formed one of the deadliest attacking trios in football history—the legendary ‘MSN’ trio. His performances cemented his legacy at the club and justified his decision to reject Madrid.

Despite eventually leaving Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in a record-breaking €222 million move, Neymar’s love for the Catalan club never faded. His connection with Messi remained strong, and on multiple occasions, he expressed his desire to reunite with the Argentine legend.

Looking back, it’s clear that Neymar’s decision was not just about money but about footballing destiny. Had he joined Real Madrid, he might have had a different career trajectory—possibly playing under different managers, in a different system, and with different teammates. Instead, he chose the path that felt right to him, and in doing so, he left an unforgettable mark on Barcelona’s history.

Neymar’s story serves as a reminder that football isn’t always about financial gain. For some players, the emotional and sporting aspects outweigh the monetary benefits. His choice to play alongside Messi and follow in the footsteps of Ronaldinho shaped his legacy, and while Madrid fans may still wonder “what if,” Barcelona supporters will always cherish the memories he created.

As Neymar continues his career, his reflections on this pivotal decision highlight the importance of listening to one’s heart in football. His journey could have been very different, but for him, Barcelona was always the dream—and one that he made a reality.
