Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has offered insights into the changes in defensive strategy under manager Arne Slot, highlighting how Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role has evolved to provide him with greater support. The shift has not only impacted Konaté’s performance but also reshaped Liverpool’s defensive stability this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Konaté reflected on how the team’s new approach has alleviated some of the defensive vulnerabilities that were prominent in previous seasons. “Trent helps a lot when we attack, which used to leave me with a big space to defend,” Konaté said. “But the way the manager has explained how we should defend together has made a big difference for me and the team.”

Under Slot, Liverpool has adopted a more cohesive defensive structure. Konaté pointed out that while the team was often exposed in past seasons, the current system ensures collective effort when possession is lost. “If you compare this season to the last one, we’re more together when we lose the ball. Everyone is working to help the team,” he added.

This season, Alexander-Arnold has taken on a slightly less aggressive role in the final third, focusing more on his defensive contributions. While there have been a few exceptions, like his struggles against Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, the overall shift has reduced Liverpool’s defensive frailties.

Konaté praised Slot for his tactical acumen, stating, “Nobody expected the manager to do what he’s done since the start of the season. He has a clear vision, and he doesn’t adapt to other teams — he makes them adapt to us. That’s a big difference compared to under Jurgen.”

Despite the improvements, Liverpool’s defensive record has shown signs of strain in recent matches. Alisson Becker has conceded from nine of the last 15 shots he’s faced, and the team has fallen behind in five of their last seven Premier League games. Konaté acknowledged the issue but remained optimistic about the team’s trajectory.

“The way we play now is more stable and patient, but we need to address the recent goals we’ve conceded. It’s something we’re working on,” he said.

The Frenchman also touched on his own development under Slot’s system. “As a defender, it’s not just about individual ability; it’s about how the team defends as a unit. I feel more confident knowing everyone is contributing,” Konaté explained.

Fans have noticed the transformation, with many crediting Slot for restoring Liverpool’s defensive solidity. However, some are concerned about Alexander-Arnold’s reduced attacking influence, which was once a hallmark of his game. Konaté defended his teammate, emphasizing the balance between attack and defense. “Trent’s contributions are still crucial. It’s about finding the right moments to push forward while staying secure at the back,” he said.

Slot’s philosophy has not only impacted the defenders but also influenced the midfield and attack, creating a more unified approach. Konaté believes this change is pivotal for Liverpool’s ambitions. “If we want to compete at the highest level, everyone needs to understand their role. That’s what the manager has instilled in us,” he remarked.

As Liverpool prepares for a crucial run of fixtures, the defensive setup will be tested against some of the league’s top sides. Konaté is confident that the team can rise to the challenge, citing the improvements they’ve already made. “We’ve come a long way since last season. It’s about continuing to build on that progress,” he said.

While the Reds have shown flashes of brilliance this season, consistency remains a challenge. For Konaté, the focus is on maintaining the balance between attack and defense, a task he believes Slot has expertly managed. “The manager has a great vision, and it’s up to us to execute it on the pitch,” he concluded.

Liverpool’s revamped defensive strategy under Slot has drawn both praise and scrutiny. As the season progresses, the team will look to strike the perfect balance that allows them to compete for silverware while addressing any lingering vulnerabilities. For Konaté, the journey is just beginning, and he remains determined to play his part.
